THE MOON IS ESSENTIAL IN ASTROLOGY

The Moon is special. It has a direct impact on us here on Earth, and we are affected by what the Moon is doing. We’re often in awe of the Moon. We say, “Look at the Moon!” when it’s bright, marveling at its beauty.

There’s a reason why we put an emphasis on New Moons and Full Moons. These are times when people seem to be more interested in what’s going on in the sky, and that’s not a coincidence. There’s an awe and a magnificence to the Moon that we see, feel, and sense.

You’ve probably heard a lot about how the Moon is connected to your emotions, but the Moon represents so much more than your emotions! In fact, in ancient astrology, “emotions” wasn’t even a keyword for the Moon. The Moon was more associated with the body, home, mother, and many other significations.

I do think that the Moon is connected to our emotions because we feel our emotions in our body, and I also think that modern astrology has overemphasized the Moon being connected to our emotions.

The Moon wants you to know ALL of its various significations. All of the planets and luminaries represent a variety of significations, not just one.

The Moon in your birth chart communicates information about your body, your home, your environment, your intuition, how you need to be nourished, how you tend to nourish others, and what you need to thrive. The Moon in your birth chart also reveals any challenges or obstacles for you getting your needs met as well.

The sign that your Moon is in in your birth chart tells you how you need to be nurtured. For example, if your Moon is in Libra, then being in beautiful environments (whatever beauty looks like to you) is incredibly important for your whole well being. It’s a need, not simply a desire.

Your Moon sign is more personal than your Sun sign because the Moon changes signs every 2-3 days. The Sun changes signs roughly every 30 days. Astrologer, Chris Brennan says,

“The Moon is the closest celestial body in our solar system to us, which makes it also a little bit more personal or a little bit more important in terms of things happening on Earth. And I think that’s one of the reasons why traditional astrologers tended to emphasize the Moon in charts in every branch of astrology…”

We’ve paid more attention to the Sun because it’s easier to discover one’s Sun sign, but that doesn’t mean that the Sun is more important. The Moon is essential.

The Moon has been thought of as mysterious, but it can be known. We simply have to pay attention to it. We’ve paid more attention to the Sun because most of us tend to be awake during the day, and we rely on the Sun to guide our day. The Moon calls our attention at night, so we see it as mysterious, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s not that we can’t know the Moon, but we have to get more quiet, go inward, and listen to the messages from within.

We’ve been socialized to embrace outward forms of expression more than internal, intuitive ones. Getting to know the Moon means unlearning that socialization and connecting more with our bodies and intuition. This is what the Moon is all about, going inward, reflecting, and listing to your intuition.

When we, astrologers, are looking at a birth chart or the chart of an event, we’re always looking at the Moon. No matter what chart we’re looking at, and no matter what is going on on a day-to-day basis, the question is always, where’s the Moon? What sign is it in, and what is it activating? The Moon is the activator.

This is why I created Moonlight. You cannot truly know or engage with astrology without understanding the Moon.
