OLD SOULS HAVE THEMES OF ISOLATION IN THEIR LIFE, BUT ALSO NEED MEANINGFUL CONNECTION
Do you feel like an old soul? Have you had significant periods in your life where you have felt isolated?
I’ve noticed a theme of isolation among old souls. From an astrological standpoint, it’s common for old souls to have 12th house placements, and the 12th house is the house of isolation, loneliness, and aloneness. However, you don’t have to have a planet in the 12th house in order to be an old soul and go through a significant period of isolation in your life. You could have had (or, are currently having) a planet, like Mars or Saturn, transiting your 12th house for a significant stretch of time symbolizing a period of greater isolation in your life.
Why would old souls have themes of isolation in their lives?
One of the key things I’ve come to understand about old souls is that we need to live life our way doing our thing. We are outsiders in one way or another. We often feel like we don’t fit in anywhere with any one, particular group of people or environment.
We’ve lived many, different lives (perhaps hundreds at this point) that we can no longer tolerate much of the world. We cannot tolerate bullshit. We cannot tolerate greed, capitalistic ways of living, patriarchy, white supremacy, and oppressive systems. We don’t fit into binaries or society’s standards, nor do we want to.
This often means that we need to isolate. Even if you’re an old soul extrovert, you still need times to yourself away from society’s demands, and away from young souls who don’t understand you.
It’s common for old souls to take on a meditation practice, attend silent meditation retreats, live in rural or isolated areas, spend long periods in nature backpacking, live alone, or find yourself needing to cocoon a lot.
Now, as an old soul, none of the above really fits me except for living alone, but those are common examples of isolation that I see among old souls in general. The living alone part is a strong need in my life, and, while one might not see that as “isolation,” it fits the theme.
And, to be clear, I’m not referring to “isolation” as a negative experience. I’m also not referring to it as a positive one. It can be both and neither. If taken to the extreme, isolation can have a negative effect for an old soul because, while isolation is a theme in an old soul’s life, old souls also need connection.
We need connection with other fellow old souls. We need genuine, emotionally intimate connections that feel meaningful. Many of us do have some young souls in our life that we love dearly, and we do tend to have our fair share of challenges in relationship with them because of our soul age differences. I do believe that the young souls we’re close with in our life are people we are here to guide and teach, even if it’s not obvious to either party, and, in fact, it will probably never been obvious to the young soul person in this lifetime.
Making sure that we don’t isolate too much can be a challenge. We are drawn towards retreating. Not necessarily going on organized retreats (though you might), but retreating into our homes with ourselves, and being in our own little worlds. The world is often too stimulating, overwhelming, and oppressive for us to deal with in large doses. So, we tend to be indoor cats, work from home, or spend a lot of time in our homes engaged in a variety of indoor activities. We live rich, inner lives behind-closed-doors.
Of course, some of us are outdoor adventurers or athletes and need to venture outside the home often. And, some old souls are ambiverts who spend a fair amount of time at home, but may have a job working with people outside of the home that they love, for example.
It’s not wrong to isolate and retreat often, AND we also want to make sure that we are connecting with each other, as the heart and soul thrive on having deep, meaningful connections full of laughter, joy, and shared values.
Have you had certain themes of isolation in your life? Have these times felt helpful for you? Do you also make time and energy for meaningful connections?
