FOR OLD SOULS, HOME IS TRANSIENT AND SPIRITUAL

Do you feel like an old soul? Have you being hesitant to call any, one particular place “home?” Does the idea of being planted in one place for a long time feel unsettling?

I’ve been studying old souls for years now (most of my astrology clients are old souls), and another theme I have noticed with us is a different kind of relationship to the so called notion of, home.

We old souls have been around a long time. We have lived, perhaps, hundreds of lives at this point. During our soul’s lifetime on Earth, we have lived in many, various places all over the globe. We’ve had different experiences in different locations that have influenced where we tend to want to visit or live.

But, we’re generally not interested in living in one, particular place for a long time. The concept of “settling down” can feel uneasy to us. For one, ancient peoples have a history of being nomadic, and since we old souls have been around a long time, our origins are nomadic.

This isn’t to say that every old soul is nomadic today, but many of us are transient in some way, shape, or form. It’s common for old souls to be digital nomads, go back and forth between locations, housesit regularly, travel frequently, move around a lot, or simply feel unsettled in any one place.

Old souls have multiple locations we feel at “home” at even if we don’t have physical homes in those locations. In fact, many old souls don’t have the financial means to buy or rent multiple homes, but old souls are resourceful and have connections. Old souls make our transient lives work in our own unique ways with the support of family, friends, community, housesits, traveling frugally, or living minimally (and, sometimes, a bit of privilege or luck is on their side).

Old souls tend to be connected to souls that are younger than us that help support our way of life because we absolutely need to live life our way on our terms. If you tell an old soul that you live nomadically, we won’t bat an eye, but a young soul will look at you like you’re from outer space (lol we are).

The idea of “home” might be something that we search for throughout our life, but we discover over and over again that home is an illusion. It is transient. It is spiritual. We’re generally not interested in the white, patriarchal capitalist notion of settling down in one home with a nuclear family working a 9-5. This kind of “stability” is an illusion, and it’s one that doesn’t strike our fancy. And, if an old soul is living a life like that, they likely feel uneasy and unsettled with it.

I keep returning to this term, Hiraeth. Home is a memory and grief of people, places, and things we experienced long ago.

For example, there’s a reason why, when I discovered Hellenistic astrology, I instantly felt at home, like this is where I belong. Hellenistic astrology was formed in ancient Egypt. I’ve always felt drawn to the Hellenistic period in ancient Egypt. Coincidence? Absolutely not. I was there at that time living a whole life. Probably as an astrologer, philosopher, and scholar.

Home is a memory and grief of the past, wonderful experiences we’ve had that we turn to over and over again. There are many experiences like this. Home is everywhere, and, yet, nowhere.

We’re not here to settle. Some of us aren’t interested in “putting down roots,” because our roots are in the sky. We know where we came from, which is why we gaze at the stars. Home is a feeling. Home is a spiritual place. Home is the constellations. Home is the galaxy.

We are home when we are spiritually connected. When we are connected to our vocation. When we are transient. When we are connected to higher purpose and meaning. When we’re loving each other. When we’re loving ourselves.

Home is the love of the Moon. “I see the Moon and the Moon sees me” 🌚

The first time I saw a solar eclipse through the eclipse glasses, I was overcome with emotion feeling like I was witnessing a part of home. Then, I continued to watch the images of the solar eclipse on the news and wept with beautiful tears feeling love. Love from the cosmos.

So far in this life, I haven’t witnessed aurora borealis in-person, but I can imagine that if I did, I would have the same feeling that I did when I saw the eclipse. From seeing photos of the Northern Lights, I feel my body and soul being drawn in, and a love encompassing.

Home is here, there, everywhere, and nowhere. Home is you, me, and our celestial origins. A bright light of love in the midnight sky.
