Saturn Leaving Aquarius: Time To Escape The Harsh Desert
Saturn has been in its home signs (of Aquarius and Capricorn) for the last five years, which have been a very, well, Saturnian time. Saturn in Aquarius has been a dry time that’s indicated some harsher realities. Saturn signifies darkness, death, loneliness, dryness, despair, depression, the horizon (sunsets), the loner, the outsider.
Saturn in Aquarius also reminds me of the last scene in Thelma and Louise where they escape the control of the police and drive off together into the Grand Canyon. The visual image of the dry desert, two lonely outsiders dealing with themes of control, systems of law and order, oppression, edges (the cliff) and death. Aquarius is the future thinking part of Saturn, thus we have Thelma and Louise being in control of their destiny or future.
Saturn can indicate harsh realities. It’s not the easiest planet to deal with. But, even through its tough love reality check, it’s often trying to be constructive even if we can’t feel that in the moment.
A positive thing about Saturn is that it calls us to reflect on and clear out the old in order to give away to the new. Emptying out our gas tanks so we can fill up again, but this time with different fuel. New fuel that will better support our lives going forward.
This has been my experience of Saturn squaring my natal Saturn, an emptying out of certain aspects of my life leaving me feel trapped in a lonely desert even though a better world awaits for me beyond the horizon.
It’s felt like a mini Saturn return, a time period that happens for all of us in our late 20s-early 30s, and again in our late 50s-early 60s. A time when we ask, where have we been? what have we been doing and where do we want to go from here? what stays and what goes?
Saturn calls us to level-up our lives, which can feel like a crisis in the moment.
This can be true for Saturn transits post-Saturn return as well like when Saturn squares Saturn (late 30s) and when Saturn opposes Saturn.
Saturn also asks us to take responsibility for our actions and our lives. Where do we need to take responsibility for how we’ve acted and the choices we’ve made? Of course, our lives are heavily influenced by society, socialization and systemic oppression too so we’re not solely responsible for everything that happens to us.
Saturn wants to be in control so it can inspire us to take control of what we can. What can we control and what can we make better for our highest good and the good of the collective?
I believe that Saturn entering Pisces soon will be itching us to think more seriously about ethics and integrity for humanity, which we’re urgently going to need with Pluto entering Aquarius indicating a new future with AI. It’s almost time to escape the dry, fixed land and enter an adaptable, creative ocean (even though it won’t be without its problems).
Where is Aquarius in your chart? This is where Saturn has been spending time since December 2020.
If you have Aquarius Rising, you might have had to deal with more health, body and physical issues or been going through an identity crisis. If Aquarius is your 2nd or 8th house, you might have had to deal with financial challenges or being called to mature with your relationship to money and resources whether through a new job/business, paying taxes, not going into more debt, or saving money. If Aquarius is your 7th house, then Saturn has been calling you to improve your relationships and to get serious about your commitments or to decide which commitments are worth your time. These are a few examples of how Saturn might have been showing up for you in the last few years.
When Saturn enters Pisces on March 7th, 2023, things will be quite different from how they’ve been so you can expect a change in your life around this time in the area of your chart where you have Pisces.
